Halowen and the Night of the Floating Pumpkins

Every year, when the autumn moon rose high above the Marble Kingdom and cold mist drifted across the hills, the marbles celebrated the mysterious Festival of Shadows.

Lanterns glowed in every window.

Children dressed as monsters and ghosts.

And giant carved pumpkins lined the streets of Marble City.

But no marble loved the spooky season more than Halowen.

Halowen was a mysterious marble covered in swirling black, glowing orange, deep purple, and ghostly silver patterns. Tiny sparkles flickered across his shell like floating candlelight, and wherever he rolled, autumn leaves seemed to swirl magically around him.

Many marbles believed Halowen could speak to spirits.

Others claimed he controlled shadows.

In truth…

he simply enjoyed being dramatic.

One chilly October evening, Jack Mitchell, Bernard the talking dog, Imogen, and Lenny arrived at Marble City for the annual Festival of Shadows.

The city looked incredible.

Thousands of floating lanterns drifted through the sky while pumpkin carts rolled through the streets selling caramel apples, spooky cakes, and glowing orange sweets.

Bernard immediately bought six candy apples.

“This,” he announced proudly, “is my kind of festival.”

Halowen greeted them wearing a long dark cloak and carrying a glowing pumpkin lantern.

“You arrived just in time,” he whispered mysteriously.

“For what?” asked Jack.

Halowen pointed toward the distant hills beyond the city.

“The floating pumpkins have returned.”

Right on cue, strange glowing lights suddenly appeared above the forests.

Hundreds of giant pumpkins floated silently through the air beneath the moonlight.

The festival crowd screamed and scattered.

One pumpkin drifted directly over the town square before exploding into a shower of glowing bats.

Bernard hid behind a pie stand instantly.

“Nope. Absolutely nope.”

Halowen explained the terrifying legend of Pumpkin Hollow, an ancient forest hidden beyond Marble City. Long ago a magical Pumpkin Crystal protected the balance between light and shadow during the Festival of Shadows.

But every hundred years, the crystal weakened.

When that happened, enchanted pumpkins escaped from the hollow and floated across the kingdom causing magical chaos.

“Last time,” Halowen said seriously, “one pumpkin turned the mayor purple for a month.”

“That sounds quite funny actually,” said Bernard.

The team followed Halowen deep into Pumpkin Hollow beneath the glowing moonlight. The forest was filled with twisted trees, glowing mushrooms, and floating ghostly mist.

Everywhere they looked, giant pumpkins drifted silently between the branches with glowing faces carved into them.

Then suddenly—

WOOOOOOOSH!

A huge flying pumpkin swooped directly toward them breathing green fire.

“THEY BREATHE FIRE NOW?” shouted Bernard.

Dragon Fire appeared from the trees looking impressed.

“I taught them.”

Of course he did.

Deep inside the hollow stood the ancient Pumpkin Crystal glowing weakly atop a stone altar surrounded by hundreds of floating pumpkins circling through the air.

The crystal had cracked.

Dark magical energy leaked into the forest, causing the pumpkins to become wild and unpredictable.

Worse still…

something enormous moved beneath the trees.

The Shadow Scarecrow.

A gigantic creature made from branches, vines, straw, and glowing pumpkin eyes emerged from the darkness carrying a giant crooked lantern staff.

“The guardian has awakened,” whispered Halowen.

The Shadow Scarecrow believed all outsiders were trying to steal the Pumpkin Crystal.

Suddenly the creature slammed its staff into the ground.

WHOOM!

Thousands of enchanted pumpkins swarmed through the forest.

Jack, Imogen, and Lenny dodged flying pumpkins while Dragon Fire accidentally encouraged them further by launching flaming pumpkins back into the air.

“This is becoming a very dangerous carnival!” Bernard yelled.

Halowen realised there was only one way to calm the hollow.

The Festival Lantern Ritual.

Using glowing lanterns carved from silver pumpkins, Halowen carefully recreated the ancient light pattern surrounding the cracked Pumpkin Crystal while the others held back the swirling pumpkin storm.

Slowly the crystal began glowing brighter.

The floating pumpkins stopped attacking.

The Shadow Scarecrow lowered its staff peacefully.

Finally Halowen placed his own lantern beside the crystal.

WHOOSHHHH!

A warm orange wave of light spread through Pumpkin Hollow.

The cracked crystal healed completely.

Every enchanted pumpkin gently floated back down to the forest floor once again.

The hollow became peaceful beneath the moonlight.

The Shadow Scarecrow gave a slow respectful bow before disappearing quietly into the trees.

Back in Marble City, the Festival of Shadows continued late into the night with fireworks, glowing lantern parades, and enormous pumpkin feasts.

Halowen smiled proudly as children rolled through the streets dressed as ghosts and monsters.

Before Jack left, Halowen handed him a tiny glowing pumpkin lantern.

“What does it do?” asked Jack.

Halowen grinned mysteriously.

“It lights the way whenever darkness appears.”

Bernard examined it nervously.

“As long as it doesn’t start flying.”
