Rock Balls of Caldy Island

Far off the rugged coast of Wales, surrounded by crashing waves and towering cliffs, stood the mysterious and windswept Caldy Island.

Most visitors knew the island for its old lighthouse, hidden caves, and ancient monastery ruins.

But very few knew its greatest secret.

Deep beneath the cliffs of Caldy Island lived the legendary Rock Balls.

The Rock Balls were some of the toughest marbles in the entire Marble Kingdom. Their marble shells looked like polished stone, covered in swirling greys, deep blacks, earthy browns, silver flecks, and rugged crystal patterns shaped by centuries of ocean storms.

Some were smooth like pebbles.

Others looked cracked like old cliff faces.

And every Rock Ball was incredibly strong.

They spent their days rolling across the island cliffs, protecting hidden tunnels, and guarding the ancient Stone Heart Cavern beneath Caldy Island.

Bernard the talking dog later described them as:

“Extremely solid company.”

One stormy afternoon, Jack Mitchell, Imogen, Lenny, and Bernard arrived on Caldy Island aboard a tiny fishing boat just as dark clouds gathered across the sea.

The island looked wild and beautiful.

Huge waves smashed against the cliffs.

Seagulls circled through the rain.

And strange rumbling noises echoed beneath the ground.

“That,” Bernard said nervously, “sounds like the island is growling.”

At the top of the cliffs they were greeted by Granite Gus, leader of the Rock Balls — a massive dark stone marble with silver crystal veins glowing faintly across his shell.

“We’ve got trouble beneath the island,” Gus warned.

Deep inside Caldy Island rested the Stone Heart, an ancient crystal rock that held the cliffs together and protected the island from the violent sea storms surrounding it.

But recently powerful tremors had begun shaking the caverns below.

Cracks spread through the cliffs.

Rockfalls blocked tunnels.

And worst of all…

something enormous had awakened beneath the sea caves.

Naturally.

The Rock Balls guided the team through hidden cliff tunnels lit by glowing crystal stones and ancient lanterns.

The deeper they travelled, the stranger the caves became.

Huge underground chambers echoed with crashing water.

Ancient stone carvings covered the walls.

And massive crystal pillars stretched high into the darkness.

Then suddenly—

CRAAAAAAASH!

Part of the cavern ceiling collapsed into the underground sea below.

A gigantic claw burst from the water.

Followed by another.

Then an enormous creature made entirely from rock and barnacles emerged from the waves.

The Sea Stone Beast.

Its glowing blue eyes lit up the caverns while seawater poured from cracks in its giant stone armour.

Bernard immediately hid behind a boulder.

“I preferred the peaceful lighthouse.”

Granite Gus stared at the creature in shock.

“The guardian has awakened.”

Long ago the Sea Stone Beast had protected the Stone Heart from invaders. But centuries of deep-earth tremors had confused the ancient creature, causing it to attack anything entering the caverns.

Unfortunately…

Evil Sprocket had secretly been drilling beneath the island searching for rare crystal minerals.

Naturally.

His giant drilling machine had cracked the Stone Heart itself.

Now the island was becoming dangerously unstable.

Massive waves crashed through the sea tunnels.

Entire cliff sections began crumbling.

And the confused Sea Stone Beast rampaged through the collapsing caverns.

“If the Stone Heart shatters,” warned Lenny, “Caldy Island could collapse into the sea!”

Working together, Jack, Imogen, and the Rock Balls battled through falling rocks and flooding tunnels while Granite Gus tried calming the ancient guardian.

At one point Bernard became trapped inside a rolling mine cart speeding toward the underground sea.

“I strongly object to island adventures!”

Meanwhile Granite Gus realised something important.

The Sea Stone Beast was not attacking out of anger.

It was protecting the island.

Just like the Rock Balls themselves.

As the caverns shook violently around them, Granite Gus slowly rolled toward the raging stone creature.

“We are guardians too,” he said firmly.

The giant beast paused.

Then, deep within the collapsing Stone Heart chamber, Jack and Imogen carefully removed Evil Sprocket’s unstable drilling device while Lenny stabilised the fractured crystal supports.

Granite Gus and the Rock Balls combined their strength together, forming a giant stone circle around the cracked Stone Heart.

Slowly the glowing crystal repaired itself.

The tremors weakened.

The underground sea calmed.

Finally—

WHOOOOOOOSHHHH!

A powerful silver-blue wave spread through Caldy Island.

The collapsing caverns stabilised instantly.

The Sea Stone Beast lowered its giant head peacefully before slowly returning beneath the ocean caves once more.

And above ground, the storm clouds parted as sunlight broke across the cliffs.

Caldy Island had been saved.

That evening the Rock Balls held a great cliffside feast beside roaring bonfires overlooking the sea.

The waves crashed peacefully below while old island songs echoed through the night wind.

Even Bernard admitted the cliffside potato stew was “unexpectedly magnificent.”

Before Jack left, Granite Gus handed him a tiny polished stone crystal taken from the repaired Stone Heart.

“What does it do?” asked Jack.

Granite Gus smiled proudly.

“It reminds you to stay strong, even during the roughest storms.”

Bernard held the smooth stone thoughtfully while watching the waves crash against the cliffs below.

“I like this island considerably more now that the giant stone monster has gone back underwater.”
